How To Make Soapnut Liquid

On The Go

Soapnut liquid is very simple to make at home. All you need is a stove, some water, and some soapnuts. To get the most out of your soapnuts, you also need a little time to let the water heat up and cool down one, possibly two, times. If you just want to make a soap nut tea, then check out the soap nuts video on our homepage.

Making soapnut liquid is even easier than what most people imagine.

Let's face it… you don't have time to sit around the stove while the soapnut liquid simmers and releases the saponin from the shells. You're out at sporting tournaments, up at the cabin, out camping in the woods, and away at school on a college campus…where they don't even allow open flames.

So, here is an alternative way to make a concentrated soap nut liquid:

All you really need is a coffee maker and some soapnuts. If you are making enough soapnut liquid to last you just for one day, then follow the smaller portioned instructions.

1 to 3 Days Usage

Fill your coffee maker carafe with 4 cups of water, preferably hot. Turn on the warmer and add the soap nuts as soon as you want to start the saponin release. Use between 8 and 12 soap nuts or fractional pieces. Let the water temperature rise and hold steady for about 20 minutes. Turn off the warmer and allow the water to cool down. Once the water is at a safe temperature, squeeze the soap nuts and rub them in your hand. As you're doing this, thin layers of the soap nut shell are being separated and new areas of the skin are now exposed. Turn the warmer back on and let the soap nut liquid heat back up again. Let this stay warm for another 20-30 minutes. Once again, let the soapnut liquid cool off before you try to handle it. If you'd like to heat the soap nut liquid up once more before you use it, then feel free. Depending on your level of usage, this soap nut liquid should last 1-3 days. You can use this concentrated soapnut liquid to clean the shower, toilet, sink, and the floors.

Remember to refrigerate the soap nut liquid to extend the shelf life.

4 to 7 Days Usage

Fill your coffee maker carafe with 8 cups of water. Use between 15 and 20 soap nuts for this batch of soap nut liquid. Follow the same instructions as above and reheat the warmer as many times as you'd like to get the desired concentration extracted from the soapnuts. Again, refrigerate to extend the shelf life of your freshly made soap nut liquid. Easy right?

Your new chemical free detergent can be used for more than just detergent. It is an all purpose cleaner that can be disposed of by any matter because it is biodegradable and completely safe for septic systems.

You can dilute your liquid as desired as well. If you do a load of laundry and find that this particular level of concentration is too high, then just add water and make your soapnut liquid go further.

The last main idea is to share some with your friends! Going green is contagious and is truly beneficial. The more people who are exposed to soap nuts and use them, the longer we can sustain our habitat.
